Volumetric weight converts occupied space into weight
Aircraft have limits for both payload and cargo-hold space. A shipment that is light but physically large can therefore be rated using volumetric weight, calculated from its external dimensions.
A common reference formula is:
Length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) × quantity ÷ 6,000
Compare the result with the shipment's actual gross weight. The higher figure is normally used as the chargeable-weight reference. The final divisor and rating method depend on the airline, route, and commercial agreement.
Worked example

The volumetric weight is 120 × 80 × 100 × 2 ÷ 6,000 = 320 kg. Because 320 kg is higher than the actual 250 kg, it becomes the comparison basis for the quotation.
Checks before requesting a quotation
- Use final dimensions including crates, pallets, and protective material
- Record dimensions and weight separately for every package
- State any protrusions, orientation limits, or no-stacking requirements
- For oversized cargo, prepare lifting points, forklift pockets, and center-of-gravity data
An indicative quotation can be prepared before packing is final, but changes to the final dimensions may affect both the rate and available flight options.
